Urban Sustainability
For reasons of both business and pleasure, it is vitally important that we bring nature back into our urban environments.
Sustainable urban technologies are innovative and down-to-earth, and range from very easy to implement (urban gardening) to incredibly complex (urban re-design). Sustainable cityscapes incorporate an array of techniques, including decentralized power generation, improved public transportation, green roofs, and passive solar. By sensibly adopting these practices, we can mitigate or offset the consequences of global warming; we can reduce various long-term health and pollution problems; and in a world of rising oil prices, we reap benefits such as increased efficiency, shorter commutes, lower cost of living, and improved quality of life.
Urban sustainability means we also reconnect with where our food comes from. And because sustainable design specifications incorporate ecosystem restoration -- especially around urban rivers, streams and wetlands -- our neighborhoods become places to encounter the renewed presence of fish, birds, and other wildlife.
